Mental health issues affect people from all walks of life, and the workplace can be a major source of stress and anxiety. Prioritising the wellbeing of your employees creates a supportive environment that encourages open and honest discussions about mental health. By doing so, we can break down the stigma surrounding mental health and ensure everyone feels comfortable seeking the help they need.
During May, the Opus Safety team marked Mental Health Awareness Week by recognising the importance of workplace mental health and allowing our colleagues to reflect and rebalance.
As we head into a new month, we’re maintaining momentum with advice to help your business foster better mental health every day.
- Keep awareness levels high – Spotlighting mental health shouldn’t be limited to one week of the year. Regularly refresh your focus with a rolling programme of resources, workshops and training sessions. Encourage open discussions about mental health and build an empathetic culture where colleagues can feel free to ask for help.
- Offer supportive working patterns – Remote working and flexible schedules can reduce stress and anxiety by creating a healthier work/life balance. Consider how changes to your team’s working patterns could help employees manage personal commitments, pursue out-of-work passions and, in turn, achieve better focus and productivity.
- Promote physical health – Mental and physical fitness are closely linked, so explore inclusive wellness programmes that champion both. Group activities boost positive social connections, so aim to get your entire team on board.
- Lead from the front – Managers who care about their own mental health show employees it’s okay to do the same. Demonstrate a commitment to self-care at senior level and encourage staff to follow your example.
- Empower employees to provide support – Establishing a team of Mental Health First Aiders creates a ready-made network of support within your business. They’re trained to spot the signs of mental ill health, provide initial assistance to individuals experiencing mental health issues and signpost appropriate support.
